I wake up at 3am
The silence is overwhelming
All the wars have silenced
and all the children have let go of their monkey bar others and are sleeping

At 3am you can hear the chest of the world heaving,
in and out, in and out
every new breath, a new life
and every out a life life forgets to hold onto
when every one everywhere is sleeping
and children dream of playing with twinkling stars
somewhere in the land of themselves too far away for the humans to intellectualize
and far enough for the adults to envy

no earphone music to cloud your airways
no tv movies campaigning for self
no internet traffic jams to disrupt your search

at 3am when all the lamps and lights have been switched off
we sleep in the dark
Why do we sleep in the dark?

Why do we sleep in the dark when there are still others up hating everything
While we’re resting from love
maybe darkness can give some light around 3am

At 3am when the lovers spoon
Bodies fit perfectly
Hoping that if they get close enough maybe they’ll finally be close enough
i hope they get close enough

When the preacher man and the freedom fighter has silenced
And it’s finally safe to think for yourself
And it’s finally safe to look for yourself in the dark
sometimes darkness is brighter than light

At 3am when the garbage bags are out sitting, waiting patiently on the sanitation engineers to come cherish them
And the dogs have finally grown tired of stealing what isn’t theirs
they retreat to a welcoming street light
hoping to find what he needs in the dim light
some people cant find what they need in the dark
He lays there and falls to sleep, mistakes in mind

At 3am when everyone everywhere is asleep
I am up writing
